Cargo Hook

Primary hook installed on the underside of a Sikorsky Blackhawk helicopter

Discussion

Although the cargo hook is a necessary part of the system that transports the Heli-Basket, this is a factory-installed item and is not supplied by Precision Lift, Inc. How to safely place a large load on the airframe of the helicopter requires careful design considerations by the aeronautical engineer.

The photo shows a pilot-controlled cargo hook installed in the belly of a Sikorsky Blackhawk helicopter. In case of emergency, such as the long line becoming entangled in trees on the ground, the pilot can open the hook and jettison the load.

The cord seen in the upper right supplies power to the solenoid (in the metal box with the white labels). The opening or throat of the hook is on the left. A shackle has been inserted past the gate and is resting on the silver-colored beam of the hook. The gate is spring-loaded and keeps the shackle on the beam.
