Military Applications of the Heli-Basket^®

The Heli-Basket deploys equipment and personnel in locations where a helicopter can not land; in particular, in rescue missions. It can insert and extract up to 16 persons at a time. It can also provide deliveries and extractions at unprepared sites where a helicopter can land, but it is preferable not to do so because of "brown out" hazard and the potential for foreign object damage (FOD).

In missions to detect and determine the extent of hazardous chemicals (HAZMAT) the Heli-Basket can carry 2 persons in protective clothing and a small utility vehicle or all-terrain vehicle to the vicinity of the contaminated zone.

Army National Guard Units in every state are equipped with Heli-Baskets. The following sequence of photos shows members of one National Guard unit observing a Heli-Basket test.

Military units are called upon to perform missions and provide logistical support in a wide variety of situations, both domestically and overseas. Here are some of the situations where a Heli-Basket can be an asset that helps a mission to be performed more easily and effectively.

Rescue: Personnel Extraction From Hostile Situations; Marine Rescue; Flood; High-Rise Building Fire; Urban Unrest; Forest Fire

Fire Protection, Control, and Suppression: Forest Fire Mop-Up Operations; Structure Protection at the Wildland/Urban Interface

Detection and Assessment: Chemical Spill (HAZMAT); Rapid Response to an Anthrax Attack; Unknown Biological and/or Chemical Agents; Decontamination

Logistical Support: Forward Air Refueling Point (FARP); Fuel Pumping and Filtration; Water Purification

Transporting cargo as an external load means no cargo in the cabin to spill or corrode. Cargo loads in the Heli-Basket can be flown safely at 80 knots.
