DNA Studies There have been great advances in the understanding of anthrax, plague, tularemia, and other diseases through laboratory studies and theoretical studies of the molecular biology. For example, the complete genetic code of Yersinia pestis, the bacteria responsible for plague, has been determined. Recent papers on the genetic makeup of DNA in Yersinia pestis appeared in the journal Nature . In the aftermath of the September 11, 2001 attacks, the intentional release of anthrax in the U.S. and many hoaxes, there are recommendations from several organizations involved with Homeland Security to restrict the amount of sensitive information made available in the public domain. Research libraries, open to qualified researchers, are the repository of the large amount of information on advances in the understanding of DNA and its implications.
